  1. The water level in hydropower reservoirs in southern Norway has fallen to the lowest level on record for this time of year, intensifying concerns over rising electricity prices in Europe this winter and increasing reliance on natural gas.
  2. Data shows that the hydropower storage in the country's southernmost electricity price region is 15.6 TWh, below the historical low of 15.7 TWh set in 1996 for the same period.
  3. As one of Europe’s largest electricity exporters, Norway’s vast hydropower system typically provides flexible peak regulation support to neighboring countries when wind and solar generation are insufficient. The current drop in water levels is weakening this vital buffer.
  4. Local energy analysis agencies warn that there is a significant risk of electricity prices surging, and the impact may persist throughout the winter and extend into spring, putting additional pressure on European natural gas demand and prices at that time.
