- Multiple Purchasing Managers' Indexes released on Tuesday indicate that global factory activity generally picked up in August. The Eurozone manufacturing sector expanded at its fastest pace in over four years, with strong rebounds in new orders. Germany's factory growth also reached a four-year high, France returned to expansion territory, while Italy and Spain saw slight contractions.
- In the UK, although manufacturing activity growth slowed slightly, companies accelerated recruitment due to rising production demand. The rate of new job creation was the fastest in more than two years, reflecting the labor market's positive response to output expansion.
- Asia benefited from sustained strong demand for artificial intelligence-related hardware. Manufacturing sectors in China, Japan, and South Korea all remained in expansion in August. Orders for chips, computers, and the AI supply chain provided robust support for regional exports, partially offsetting the cost pressures brought on by geopolitical conflicts.
- Institutional analysis suggests that manufacturing in Europe has benefited from order shifts caused by Asian competitors experiencing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The resilience of Asian economies signals that an upswing in the global technology cycle is offsetting weakness in traditional industrial goods demand.
- Further attention will be paid to the progress of negotiations on Middle Eastern shipping routes and the trend of energy prices impacting manufacturing costs. If geopolitical tensions do not ease, regional restructuring of supply chains may continue to support local orders in Europe, but could also push up inflation expectations, making central bank policy decisions more complex.
