Tesla stops selling solar roofs ten years after their launch.

According to Zhitong Finance APP, after nearly a decade of commercial attempts, Tesla’s (TSLA.US) iconic Solar Roof project was officially declared terminated this week. Citing insider sources, the media reported that Tesla has officially ceased production of the Solar Roof product and has notified its network of certified third-party installers that it will no longer supply solar roof tiles, retaining only the supply and service of traditional solar panels.

On August 20, a series of changes on Tesla’s official website officially confirmed the end of the Solar Roof. This decision marks the full withdrawal from the core narrative constructed by Elon Musk to facilitate the 2016 acquisition of SolarCity. The “Solar Roof” dedicated page on Tesla’s website now redirects to the traditional solar panel page, and this option has been completely removed from the Energy business navigation menu. The only remaining energy products listed are solar panels, Powerwall home energy storage batteries, and Megapack large-scale energy storage systems, cementing the prolonged contraction of the business over the past several years.

Financially Unsustainable: Significant Price Surges and Severely Missed Installation Targets

Internal assessments at Tesla have concluded that the Solar Roof product is not financially viable due to the mismatch between its exorbitant, out-of-control costs and extremely disappointing installation rates.

Prices Far Exceeding Promises: Tesla initially claimed that Solar Roof installations would cost less than a “new roof plus solar panels” combination, with early price quotes around $22 per square foot. However, actual installation costs far exceeded estimates, with significant price hikes even after customers signed contracts. In 2021, Tesla drastically increased the price of the Solar Roof, with some customers experiencing post-contract price jumps—one customer’s contract price was about $72,000, but the price surged to approximately $146,000 before construction. Some customers reported installation quotes as high as $200,000. The incident led to a class-action lawsuit, which Tesla settled in 2023 for $6 million.

Missed Installation Goals: Musk set multiple targets for the Solar Roof, aiming for 1,000 installations per week by late 2019 to mid-2020. However, according to the energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie, peak weekly installations were only 21 to 32 systems, less than 5% of the goal. Since its 2016 launch, Tesla has installed only about 3,000 systems in the U.S. market in total.

Design and Cost Dilemmas: The Solar Roof tiles are unique, proprietary components, requiring Tesla to design and purchase production equipment themselves; when sales fell short, the per-unit cost increased. Additionally, its distinctive tight-fit design led to overheating issues, potentially reducing power generation efficiency.

A Product Born for Acquisition: The End of a Decade-Long Narrative

The creation of the Solar Roof itself was a “story” designed to serve capital operations. In October 2016, Musk launched the product with fanfare at a Hollywood backlot. Weeks later, Tesla shareholders approved the $2.6 billion acquisition of the debt-burdened solar installer SolarCity. At the time, Musk was SolarCity’s largest shareholder and chairman, and the company was run by his cousins. The product demonstration was seen as key to convincing investors to back the deal.

However, subsequent shareholder lawsuits revealed that the tiles showcased at the 2016 launch were not actually functional, power-generating products at that time. Nearly a decade later, this product—which once provided justification for the acquisition—has finally been officially abandoned.

Comprehensive Strategic Shift: Traditional Solar Panels and Storage Systems Become Core Focus

With the discontinuation of the Solar Roof, Tesla has now clarified the future direction of its energy business.

Focus on Traditional Solar Panels: The company has fully shifted its strategy to traditional solar panels, which are manufactured at its Buffalo, New York factory and began residential deliveries this year. Tesla mainly promotes standard rooftop photovoltaic solutions paired with Powerwall storage batteries.

“Project Crystal Sun” Megaproject: Tesla has submitted a plan to Texas this month, proposing a $10.1 billion investment to build a large-scale solar cell factory outside Houston. The internal code name for the project is “Project Crystal Sun,” with completion expected in 2028 and commercial operations in Q1 2029, creating approximately 9,712 permanent jobs. Musk has stated that the ultimate production target for the Texas solar base is 100 GW of solar panels per year.

Energy Storage Becomes Growth Engine: Tesla’s energy storage business has become a key growth driver in its energy portfolio. In 2025, its energy business revenue reached $12.77 billion, a 27% year-over-year increase, with a gross margin close to 30%—significantly higher than its automotive segment.
