OpenAI's annualized revenue has exceeded $40 billions, doubling compared to the end of last year, with a month-on-month growth rate of over 20% in July. The growth is mainly driven by AI programming tools, subscription services, and enterprise demand for AI Agents. In response to competition from Anthropic and open-source projects, OpenAI has also lowered the prices for some of its models.

OpenAI's revenue growth momentum is accelerating.

On August 13, according to Bloomberg citing sources familiar with the matter, OpenAI’s current annualized revenue has surpassed $40 billion, doubling compared to the end of 2025, providing a stronger foundation for its upcoming IPO.

The main drivers of this growth are AI programming software, subscription sales, and the nascent advertising business, with the core consumer business also continuing to expand.

OpenAI co-founder and President Greg Brockman revealed in an internal announcement that the company’s annualized revenue growth in July exceeded 20% month-over-month.

OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar previously stated that by the end of last year, the company’s annualized revenue had already exceeded $20 billion.

Revenue Doubles as AI Agent Demand Surges

One of the key recent growth drivers has been strong enterprise demand for AI Agents.

OpenAI’s Codex for programming and ChatGPT Work for multiple tasks have both seen a significant increase in demand.

Meanwhile, the company has lowered prices for some models to more effectively compete with Anthropic and a range of open-source model competitors in price-sensitive customer markets.

On the same day, OpenAI announced the appointment of a new Chief Revenue Officer—this is the company’s second change to this position in less than a year. The new appointee comes from the cybersecurity industry, aiming to accelerate enterprise sales growth.

Competitive Landscape with Anthropic

OpenAI is currently engaged in fierce competition with Anthropic for enterprise clients.

Once seen as a challenger, Anthropic has gradually gained market share with a suite of AI products including programming tools, and in May of this year announced that its annualized revenue had surpassed $47 billion. There may be differences in the calculation of annualized revenue between the two companies.

Both companies have submitted confidential IPO filings. According to reports, Anthropic is expected to list as early as this fall, ahead of OpenAI.
