Super Micro Computer's stock price surged by over 15%. Although the company’s latest Q4 FY2026 results showed revenue below market expectations, its earnings exceeded forecasts due to improved gross margins. The company also issued strong revenue and earnings per share guidance for FY2027.

According to Zhitong Finance APP, on Wednesday, Super Micro Computer (SMCI.US) shares surged over 15%. Although the company's latest Q4 FY2026 revenue missed market expectations, profits outperformed due to improved gross margins, and it also provided strong revenue and EPS guidance for FY2027. Analysts had mixed reactions: some institutions are optimistic about growth driven by AI infrastructure demand, while others warn that the high proportion of GPU server business may continue to weigh on profit margins and free cash flow.

FY2027 Revenue Guidance Far Exceeds Market Expectations

Needham maintained its "Buy" rating and $46 price target for Super Micro Computer. The firm noted that the company's Q4 revenue missed consensus, but profit performance exceeded expectations, mainly due to a stronger-than-expected gross margin.

More notable for the market is the company’s FY2027 outlook. Super Micro Computer projects a median FY2027 revenue of $68.5 billion, significantly higher than Wall Street's approximately $54.4 billion expectation before the results. Management also reaffirmed the previously announced $60 billion backlog, providing strong visibility for future revenue growth.

Needham stated that the Q4 revenue shortfall was primarily caused by temporary client delays related to power, cooling, and network infrastructure, rather than any marked deterioration in end-market demand for AI servers.

From a business mix perspective, enterprise channels contributed around 50% of Q4 FY2026 sales, a sharp increase from 28% in the previous quarter; AI solutions accounted for about 60% of revenue. However, based on the current order backlog structure, the company expects the proportion of AI solution revenue to rise back to about 80% in the future.

Needham also expects the company's gross margin to gradually improve overall from the roughly 10.6% level guided for Q1 FY2027.

Gross Margin Surprises at 17.6%, Wedbush Raises Target Price

Wedbush raised Super Micro Computer’s price target from $34 to $40 and maintained a "Neutral" rating.

Analyst Matt Bryson pointed out that the company’s Q4 overall performance was largely in line with earlier guidance, but gross margin far exceeded expectations, reaching 17.6%—more than double the prior 8.2% to 8.4% guidance range.

Wedbush believes future growth expectations for Super Micro Computer appear reasonable for now, and with management expecting gross margin to normalize at around 10%, this target should be relatively achievable. In addition, after a stock price correction, the company's valuation has returned to or even below historically common levels for server vendors, creating conditions for a more constructive outlook in the future.

However, Wedbush remains cautious for now. Bryson stated that the firm wants to see Super Micro Computer complete its investigation into shipments of GPU servers to China and implement new internal controls to reduce the likelihood of similar compliance issues recurring.

Wedbush also believes Super Micro Computer’s strong order backlog and optimistic FY2027 outlook are positive signals for Dell Technologies (DELL.US) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE.US), as this shows demand for AI servers and related infrastructure remains robust, potentially benefiting SMCI’s main OEM competitors.

Susquehanna Maintains "Negative" Rating, Warns GPU Business Continues to Suppress Profit Margins

Compared to Needham, Susquehanna is clearly more cautious, maintaining a "Negative" rating and $15 price target on Super Micro Computer.

The firm argues that increased contributions from CPU servers and traditional enterprise systems to revenue will likely aid profitability, as those products usually have higher gross margins than GPU servers. However, to maintain the current rapid growth, Super Micro Computer must keep a high exposure to GPU-driven AI infrastructure deployments, which will continue to weigh on overall gross margin and may result in persistent free cash outflows.

Susquehanna also noted that recent financing has eased near-term liquidity pressure, but there is almost no sign that management is significantly altering its "growth-first" operational strategy.

The firm highlights that over the past three to five years, Super Micro Computer’s cumulative free cash flow consumption has significantly exceeded cumulative operating profit, reflecting that the business model is still more focused on scaling revenue than prioritizing shareholder value creation.

AI Server Demand Remains Strong, but Profit Quality Still at the Core of Market Debate

Overall, this earnings report has reinforced market expectations for Super Micro Computer’s future revenue growth. With a $60 billion backlog and FY2027 revenue guidance of $68.5 billion, AI infrastructure investment continues to drive huge demand for the company.

However, Wall Street’s main debate has shifted from "is there demand for AI servers" to "can this rapid growth translate into sustainable profits and cash flow." On one hand, a higher share of enterprise and CPU system sales helps optimize the product mix; on the other, the expectation that AI business will again account for about 80% of revenue means GPU servers will remain the growth engine—their relatively lower margins and higher capital needs could continue to limit profit quality.

Therefore, despite the strong FY2027 outlook boosting SMCI's stock price, analysts remain divided over whether the company can both maintain rapid expansion in its AI business and improve gross margin and free cash flow.
