Sam Altman holds $1B stake in Reddit with 12.2M shares, despite owning zero equity in OpenAI
Sam Altman, the person most associated with the AI revolution, has quietly built his largest known personal fortune not from OpenAI but from Reddit. His roughly 12.2 million shares in the social platform crossed the $1 billion valuation threshold after Reddit posted strong Q3 2024 earnings, sending shares surging approximately 20% to around $98 in after-hours trading.
That makes Altman one of Reddit’s top individual shareholders, controlling an estimated 8.7% to 9% of the company’s total shares. Only Advance Publications and Tencent hold larger positions.
A decade-long bet that paid off
Altman’s Reddit position didn’t materialize overnight. He first invested during Reddit’s Series B funding round back in 2014, when he was serving as president of Y Combinator. He continued backing the company over the years, pouring roughly $60 million into Reddit’s funding rounds in 2021. His holdings include both Class A shares and supervoting Class B shares, giving him influence that extends beyond the raw dollar value of his position.
When Reddit finally went public in March 2024 with shares priced at $34, Altman’s long patience started converting into real, liquid wealth. The stock nearly tripled from its IPO price to around $98 by late October, transforming what was already a substantial stake into a ten-figure one.
The OpenAI equity paradox
What makes this situation particularly striking is the contrast with Altman’s position at OpenAI. Despite leading a company that reportedly commands one of the highest private valuations in tech history, Altman holds no direct equity in OpenAI. He has publicly stated he has no plans to accept a large equity package.
What Reddit’s trajectory means for the stake
Reddit’s IPO lockup period, which restricted major shareholders from selling, expired in September 2024. That milestone opened the door for large holders like Altman to begin offloading shares if they choose to.
So far, there’s no public indication that Altman has sold any meaningful portion of his position. Reddit’s business model has evolved significantly in recent years, with the company monetizing its vast troves of user-generated content through advertising and, more recently, through data licensing deals with AI companies.
The concentration risk in Altman’s position is notable. A roughly $1 billion stake representing nearly 9% of a single company means his personal financial outcomes are heavily tied to Reddit’s performance.
For investors watching Reddit as a public company, Altman’s continued holding is a data point worth tracking. Major insider sales from a shareholder of his size would likely be disclosed in SEC filings. Conversely, his decision to hold through the lockup expiration suggests he sees further upside, or at minimum, no urgency to diversify away from the position that made him a billionaire.
