Strategy CEO Phong Le says selling thousands of Bitcoin is ‘irrelevant’ to market pricing
When you own more than 842,000 Bitcoin, selling a few thousand is the equivalent of finding loose change in your couch cushions. That’s essentially the message from Strategy Inc. CEO Phong Le, who addressed the company’s recent Bitcoin sales by arguing they had zero meaningful impact on the market.
Le described the transactions as routine capital management, not distress signals. For a company that holds over 4% of Bitcoin’s entire supply, the framing makes mathematical sense.
The sales in question
Strategy’s first Bitcoin sale since 2022 came in late May 2026, when the company offloaded 32 BTC for roughly $2.5 million. Le characterized this as a test sale, essentially a dry run to make sure the plumbing worked.
Then came the real transaction. In June 2026, Strategy sold 3,588 BTC as part of what management called an operational strategy tied to broader capital-structure adjustments.
To put that in perspective, 3,588 BTC represents roughly 0.4% of Strategy’s total holdings. Le called the amount “irrelevant” to market pricing discussions.
Why sell at all?
Le laid out several potential uses for the proceeds: dividends, debt servicing, and share repurchases. There’s also a tax angle. The sales may have generated realized losses that could create tax assets for the company, meaning Strategy could potentially offset future tax liabilities.
Le has been explicit about framing these moves as strategic rather than reactive. The company isn’t selling because it needs cash in a panic. It’s selling because selective monetization fits into a broader capital management framework that includes managing debt obligations and returning value to shareholders.
The JPMorgan of crypto
Perhaps the most revealing moment came when Le compared Strategy to JPMorgan, describing his company as “the JPMorgan of the crypto economy.”
This represents a meaningful evolution from the Michael Saylor era. Saylor, who now serves as Executive Chairman, built Strategy’s Bitcoin thesis around the idea that Bitcoin was a superior store of value that should be accumulated indefinitely. The core position remains enormous at over 842,000 BTC, making Strategy the largest institutional Bitcoin holder on the planet, surpassing even BlackRock. But the edges of that position are now being actively managed.
