Strategy Sells 1,690 BTC as Schiff Questions Bitcoin’s Role as Collateral

Strategy sold 1,690 Bitcoin for about $108.6 million, drawing renewed criticism from longtime Bitcoin critic Peter Schiff over the company’s decision to sell part of its cryptocurrency holdings.

Schiff argued that the sale suggests lenders still prefer dollars over Bitcoin when securing financing. Strategy used the proceeds to repurchase its STRC preferred stock, adding to a series of Bitcoin sales this year.

The latest transaction brings Strategy’s Bitcoin sales in 2026 to 6,948 BTC. Despite the disposals, the company remained one of the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holders, with 840,447 BTC as of Aug. 10.

Schiff said Strategy is increasingly selling Bitcoin to build dollar reserves and meet its financial obligations. He also urged investors to sell MSTR shares and Bitcoin.

The latest sale follows earlier disposals of 32 BTC, 3,588 BTC and 1,638 BTC. Strategy has also used Bitcoin sales to help fund dividends and meet other obligations tied to its shares.

The transactions come after years in which Strategy largely focused on accumulating Bitcoin. The recent sales suggest the company is prepared to tap its holdings when it needs liquidity, even as it continues to maintain a large Bitcoin position.

Strategy’s supporters see the sales differently. Macro strategist Dan Hillery described the transactions as a way to optimize the company’s balance sheet during periods of market volatility.
