The core driving force is the explosive growth of Palantir's US commercial business in Q2, with a year-on-year increase of 149% and total contract value exceeding $2 billion. The market narrative has shifted from "AI loser" to "AI winner," and its differentiated "sovereign AI" positioning has gained institutional recognition. Deutsche Bank subsequently upgraded its rating to "Buy."

"AI Application Leader" Returns! Palantir Achieves "Strongest Weekly Performance Since 2024"

Palantir made a strong comeback this week with a better-than-expected earnings report, with its stock price surging nearly 40% in a single week, marking its best weekly performance since November 2024, completely reversing the market's previous labeling of it as an "AI loser." After experiencing a year-to-date decline as high as 40% earlier in the year, Palantir's stock price has now almost returned to flat for the year.

Earlier this week, Palantir CEO Alex Karp described the company's Q2 results as "exceptionally strong." Wall Street's reaction validated this view—with a single day surge of more than 10% on Friday, pushing the stock price up nearly 40% for the week, marking the most robust weekly performance since November 2024. At that time, a similarly strong earnings report had triggered the previous rally, but the core driver this time is the explosive growth of its U.S. commercial business.

According to the latest earnings report, Palantir's U.S. commercial business grew by 149% year-over-year, with the total value of U.S. commercial contracts in the second quarter surpassing $2 billion, jumping 153% year-over-year. This data not only forces the market to re-evaluate Palantir's commercial capabilities but also leads to a re-pricing of its competitive position in the AI application market.

Narrative Reversal: From "AI Loser" to "AI Winner"

Palantir’s market narrative is undergoing a significant shift.

According to MarketWatch, William Blair analyst Louie DiPalma previously wrote in a report that the market narrative surrounding Palantir is shifting from "AI loser" to "AI winner."

DiPalma pointed out that Palantir’s better-than-expected results "dispel concerns about intensifying competition from Anthropic and OpenAI in the enterprise AI workflow sector."

This statement means that previous market concerns about Palantir’s shrinking room for survival amid pressure from major AI model providers are being alleviated by its actual performance.

At the beginning of this year, Palantir became entangled in the broader sell-off wave of software stocks, with its stock price dropping by about 40% from its early-year peak. Now, with the release of this earnings report, the stock price has almost recovered all its losses for the year. The speed of this sentiment reversal reflects investors' renewed assessment of the business prospects for AI applications.

Sovereign AI Positioning: The Core Support for Differentiated Competition

The results behind Palantir's performance reflect a clear bet in its AI strategic positioning—Sovereign AI. The company emphasizes empowering enterprises and institutions to control their own data and models, rather than handing data over to external AI platforms for processing.

Company CEO Alex Karp has publicly characterized the business model of some leading AI labs as attempting to "colonize" clients—building their advantage by absorbing clients’ business intelligence and proprietary data.

This position places Palantir in clear tension with mainstream AI model providers, but it precisely addresses the core demands of corporate clients for data governance and security compliance.

Palantir’s platform helps clients connect dispersed data sources and deploy AI models in their core business processes. This capability is increasingly recognized by enterprise customers and is reflected directly in the rapid growth of commercial contract numbers.

After the earnings report was released, Deutsche Bank analyst Brad Zelnick upgraded Palantir from "hold" to "buy," making it one of the most representative shifts in institutional attitudes this week.

In a recent report, Zelnick noted that Palantir has demonstrated an exceptional ability to deliver high-value AI applications to clients at this point in time, while many traditional software giants are still struggling with their business transformations. He wrote:

"Importantly, this quarter’s results showcase Palantir’s Sovereign AI capabilities. We believe that, as customers increasingly understand that creating AI value is not simply about consuming more computing power, but about translating that power into governed, measurable business outcomes, Palantir’s positioning is resonating ever more widely."

Analysts believe that this rating upgrade and Palantir’s strong stock performance reinforce each other, indicating that institutional investors' confidence in the sustainability of its business model is being rebuilt.
