About Sky (SKY)

What Is Sky?

Sky Protocol is a decentralized and permissionless financial infrastructure designed to support stablecoin transactions, governance, and decentralized finance (DeFi) services. Built as an evolution of MakerDAO, Sky Protocol introduces USDS, a new stablecoin, and SKY, an upgraded governance token, to enhance decentralization and scalability.

The protocol operates without intermediaries, allowing users to trade tokens, earn rewards, and participate in governance while maintaining full control over their assets. Sky Protocol is a non-custodial system, meaning users do not need to trust a third party to manage their funds.

Sky Protocol powers the Sky Ecosystem, which includes:

- USDS Stablecoin – A soft-pegged USD stablecoin backed by collateral.

- SKY Governance Token – A token for voting on protocol decisions.

- Sky Savings Rate (SSR) – A system that allows USDS holders to earn interest.

- Sky Token Rewards (STRs) – A rewards program for USDS stakers.

By leveraging smart contracts on Ethereum, Sky Protocol aims to create a transparent, decentralized financial system accessible to anyone.

How Sky Works

Sky Protocol functions as a stablecoin issuance and governance system, enabling users to generate, trade, and save stablecoins without centralized oversight. The ecosystem operates through a few key components:

1. Stablecoin System

- USDS is the core stablecoin of Sky Protocol, backed by collateralized assets and soft-pegged to the US dollar.

- Users can mint USDS by depositing accepted collateral assets into Sky Vaults, similar to how Dai was created in MakerDAO.

- USDS can be traded, staked, or held as a store of value.

2. Sky Vaults Collateralization

- Users generate USDS by locking collateral assets (such as ETH or tokenized real-world assets) in Sky Vaults.

- If the value of the collateral falls below a certain threshold, the protocol liquidates the position to ensure stability.

3. Sky Token Rewards (STRs) Sky Savings Rate (SSR)

- USDS holders can earn rewards by participating in the Sky Token Rewards program.

- The Sky Savings Rate (SSR) allows users to stake USDS and earn passive income.

- Unlike traditional banking, these rewards are distributed without intermediaries, relying on smart contracts to automate transactions.

4. Governance Decentralization

- Sky Protocol is governed by SKY token holders, who vote on risk parameters, collateral types, stability fees, and protocol upgrades.

- Decisions are made through a decentralized on-chain voting process, ensuring transparency and community control.

Sky Protocol integrates both crypto-native assets (ETH, USDT, USDC) and Real-World Assets (RWAs) as collateral, providing a bridge between DeFi and traditional finance.

What Is SKY Token?

The SKY token is the governance token of the Sky Protocol, replacing MakerDAO’s MKR token at a conversion rate of 1 MKR = 24,000 SKY. SKY allows holders to:

- Participate in Governance – Vote on protocol decisions, risk management, and feature upgrades.

- Trade for USDS Other Assets – SKY can be exchanged for USDS, ETH, or stablecoins in decentralized liquidity pools.

- Earn Rewards – SKY holders will soon be able to access Activation Token Rewards, offering additional benefits for governance participants.

SKY vs MKR: What’s Different?

- MKR was the governance token for MakerDAO, while SKY is the upgraded version for Sky Protocol.

- SKY tokens are designed to provide more decentralized control with expanded governance features.

- The rebrand reflects a move towards scalability, with independent subDAOs handling different parts of the ecosystem.

SKY tokens play a crucial role in the long-term sustainability of the protocol, incentivizing user participation while ensuring decentralized decision-making.

Sky Protocol vs. MakerDAO

Sky Protocol is essentially MakerDAO’s next evolution, addressing governance bottlenecks and expanding its financial ecosystem. While MakerDAO pioneered decentralized stablecoins with Dai (DAI) and a governance model centered on MKR holders, its decision-making process became slow and complex. Sky Protocol improves on this by introducing USDS (a revamped stablecoin) and SKY (a new governance token) while shifting governance to independent SubDAOs for faster, more efficient decision-making. It also moves beyond purely crypto-backed collateral by integrating tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) like real estate and bonds.

Conclusion

Sky Protocol takes what MakerDAO built and makes it faster, more scalable, and easier to govern. With USDS as the new stablecoin, SKY for governance, and real-world assets (RWAs) as collateral, it expands DeFi beyond just crypto. By introducing independent SubDAOs and AI-powered governance tools, Sky Protocol aims to keep things decentralized, efficient, and built for the future.

$GRVT Sky [$SKY] had one of the most notable declines in the past day. The asset has since plunged by 12% at press time, as bearish pressure continues to kick in, forcing the price lower. Market analysis indicates that further decline isn’t off the table and that investors need to be more wary, as capital flow and losses recorded in the past day still carry a major risk of further decline. Whale activity drives $SKY’s latest decline Whales, traders who control large amounts of capital in an asset, have been the major influencing factor behind $SKY’s recent performance. The Whale Retail Delta, a tool used to track which cohort of the market is dominating, confirmed the presence of whales in the market. The Whale Retail Delta has a reading of 0.288 as of writing, a surge from its previous day’s level, confirming that whale activity in the market increased over this period. Whale activity is already affecting the market, with a large disparity between the losses recorded by long and short traders over the past 24 hours. Long traders lost around $63,000, while short traders in the market lost a meagre $84 within the same period. This represents roughly 750 times more losses recorded by longs than shorts over the same period, suggesting the scale of whale involvement in the market and how much it can impact price dynamics. Derivatives data points to further downside The perpetual market has provided the clearest indication that a potential decline could be ahead for $SKY in the coming trading sessions. This comes as the Funding Rate turns negative, reading -0.0008% at the time of writing. Notably, the Funding Rate began declining from 0.0079% in the early hours of the 8th of October to its present level. When there is a notable decline in the Funding Rate, it confirms that selling began in the early hours of the day. This has also been followed by a contraction in the capital base of the perpetual market. Open Interest, which calculates the amount of capital in the perpetual contracts of an asset, has declined by 13% to roughly $51 million. Whales are already affecting the market, driving a large disparity between the losses recorded by long and short traders over the past 24 hours.

$GRVT On October 7, 2026, Moody’s Ratings scored Sky Protocol a B3 issuer rating with a stable outlook.  This happens to be the first-ever rating the agency has assigned to a stablecoin protocol. This is an important move to institutional investors who may be sitting on the fence as regards USDS, because it gives the dollar stablecoin issuer a score from a second major agency. The only protocol scored by two major agencies Sky announced that the B3 score by Moody’s means it’s the only stablecoin protocol rated by Moody’s and S&P Global. The B3 grade is on par with the “B-“that S&P scored Sky in August 2025. B3 is a non-investment-grade mark.   The protocol saw the rating as a pat on the back rather than a warning about any future occurrence.  Greg Feibus, who serves as the Global Head of Capital Markets at the firm, stated that “The value of independent credit ratings is that they allow institutional investors to assess Sky through frameworks they already use across global markets.”  He opined that Sky attaining multiple assessments only serves to strengthen Sky’s credit profile in the eyes of institutional investors.   What S&P flagged a year prior The latest rating by Moody’s comes with some familiar narratives. S&P rated Sky a B- in August last year, and when it did so, it noted Sky’s high depositor concentration, highly centralized governance, and weak risk-adjusted capitalization.  In fact, Sky’s founder, Rune Christensen, had up to 9% of the protocol’s governance tokens, which S&P felt gave him enormous influence over Sky’s future, especially with extremely low voter turnout.  Also, Sky’s 0.4% risk-adjusted capital ratio and thin surplus buffer were flagged by S&P as a “noteworthy weakness,” and predicted an upgrade wasn’t realistic in the next 12 months.  Reports framed the grade in blunter terms: a B- rating makes USDS and DAI somewhat on the same level as government bonds from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Any debt with a rating below BBB- is pretty much high-yield or junk. Why institutions are interested anyway The ratings come at a good time; they come as institutional investors strengthen their bond with Sky.  Galaxy Digital saw that $100 million of sUSDS (the savings version of USDS) was added to its corporate treasury. It went on to approve USDS as collateral throughout its institutional lending desk and purchased an unknown amount of the SKY governance token. All of this happened in late September. Feibus linked the interest from Galaxy to the S&P rating from 2025. Standard Chartered’s projection for Sky’s USDS is a favorable one, with the bank predicting 5x returns for token holders by 2028.  The reserve problem Sky is looking to fix Sky seems to have a challenge with its reserves, as both Moody’s and S&P noted in their scorecards. The protocol seems to be taking action; however.  In March of this year, there was a vote by the governing cooperative of the protocol to slash its daily buyback program by 87% and to redistribute funds towards its backstop buffer. It remains to be seen if such a move will move the needle with both agencies. S&P plans to increase Sky’s rating if it sees improvement in governance concentration, thin capital, and depositor concentration. Until then, we wait. If you're reading this, you’re already ahead. Where Did $MKR Go? Maker Is Now $SKY, and Most Holders Don't Know It If you search for the MKR price today, you'll find a token trading below $0.10 instead of $2,000+. Did Maker crash 99.99%? No. Maker ($MKR) has been rebranded and redenominated as Sky ($SKY). Here is what changed and why it matters. What Is the MKR to SKY Rebrand? In August 2024, MakerDAO, the protocol behind the DAI stablecoin, rebranded as Sky Protocol. Its governance token $MKR was upgraded to $SKY, which is now the only governance token of the Sky ecosystem. The stablecoin was upgraded as well, with DAI converting to USDS at a 1:1 ratio. 1 MKR = 24,000 SKY: The Ratio That Explains Everything: Every MKR converts into 24,000 SKY tokens. This is a redenomination, the same way a company stock split works. Holders receive more units, each unit is worth less, and the total value stays the same. SKY price $0.093 × 24,000 = $2,232 per MKR-equivalent So SKY at $0.093 is effectively MKR at $2,232. That's why the price looks dramatically lower. No value was lost in the conversion. Supply Check: The Numbers Add Up About 977K MKR × 24,000 = about 23.4 billion SKY SKY's total supply of roughly 23.46B matches this calculation. The market cap carried over directly from MKR to SKY. How to Calculate the Real SKY Price in MKR Terms: To compare today's SKY price with historical MKR charts, multiply by 24,000: SKY at $0.093 = about $2,232 MKR-equivalent SKY ATH at $0.1014 = about $2,434 MKR-equivalent SKY is currently trading only about 8% below its ATH. In MKR terms, that puts it back above the $2,200 level. Still Holding MKR? Read This Before You Upgrade: The full-value upgrade window closed in September 2025. If you still hold MKR in a self-custody wallet, late upgrades now carry a delayed-upgrade penalty that increases every quarter. The longer you wait, the less SKY you receive. If your MKR was held on an exchange, most platforms converted balances automatically, so check your SKY balance. Use only the official Sky upgrade portal. Fake migration sites target confused MKR holders. Myth vs Reality: "SKY Is Under $0.10, It Can 100x" This is the most common mistake retail investors make with SKY. A $0.093 price does not mean the token is undervalued. SKY's market cap is about $2.17B, and that number is what determines its potential. A 100x from here would mean a $217B market cap, larger than most of the crypto market. Always value tokens by market cap, not by price per token. Key Takeaways: ➤ MKR is now SKY, and Maker is now Sky Protocol ➤ 1 MKR = 24,000 SKY, which is a redenomination and not a crash ➤ SKY at $0.093 equals about $2,232 per MKR ➤ SKY is trading about 8% below its ATH of $0.1014 ➤ DAI has been upgraded to USDS at a 1:1 ratio ➤ Late MKR upgrades lose value to a quarterly-growing penalty ➤ Use only the official Sky portal to upgrade Note: Don't fall for the biggest myth that $SKY is "cheap" compared to $MKR: at $0.093, SKY equals $2,232 per MKR (1 MKR = 24,000 SKY), which puts it about 10,500% above MKR's 2017 low of $21.
