Dow Jones2026/11/04 17:46By John Keilman
Materials maker 3M saw its shares jump 9% in afternoon trading Wednesday following the announcement of a $7.4 billion settlement over injury claims related to so-called "forever chemicals."
The company said it would pay the amount over nine years to as many as 120,000 plaintiffs who claim they've suffered from cancer and other maladies following exposure to firefighting foam that contained forever chemicals known as PFAS.
3M didn't admit liability as part of the agreement.
Chief Executive Bill Brown said the company viewed the settlement terms as favorable, and Wall Street agreed. UBS analyst Amit Mehrotra said in a research note that investors expected a settlement cost of around $10 billion, and that the end of the litigation "removes a meaningful overhang" in the company's shares.

JPMorgan economist Feroli pointed out that the only expiring Federal Reserve Board position in the next two years is Powell's chairmanship (January 2028). If the White House wants to fill it, it must nominate a candidate acceptable to the Democratic-controlled Senate; otherwise, the seat will remain vacant. Meanwhile, the political value of removing Board member Cook has therefore diminished, and current Chair Waller's path to reappointment is also facing new congressional public relations pressure.
