Record High Monthly Active Users Can't Hide Risks: Pinterest (PINS.US) Q3 Revenue and Profit Both Miss Expectations, Q4 Guidance Weak, Shares Drop Over 10% After Hours
Pinterest (PINS.US), the image-based social networking and shopping platform, released its Q3 2026 financial report on Thursday, October 29 local time. Although global monthly active users (MAU) reached a historic high of 661 million and net sales achieved double-digit growth, both the company's revenue and adjusted profit for the quarter fell short of Wall Street expectations.
According to Zhitong Finance APP, the image social and shopping platform Pinterest (PINS.US) released its Q3 2026 financial report on Thursday, October 29 (local time). Despite Pinterest reaching a record high of 661 million global Monthly Active Users (MAU) and achieving double-digit growth in net revenue, both quarterly revenue and adjusted profit fell short of Wall Street expectations. Moreover, its revenue guidance for the holiday shopping season (Q4) was entirely below analysts’ forecasts, greatly disappointing investors. Following the earnings release, Pinterest's share price was hammered in after-hours trading, once plummeting over 13%, after already closing nearly 5% lower during regular trading hours.
Revenue Growth Slows, Results Miss Expectations
The financial report shows that Pinterest's Q3 revenue was $1.174 billion, up 12% year-over-year (12% growth by both reported and constant currency basis), but below the analysts' average estimate of $1.21 billion. Adjusted non-GAAP EPS was $0.46, missing the market expectation of $0.49. Adjusted EBITDA was $339 million (margin 28.9%), also slightly below the expected $348 million.
The two profit measures diverged sharply: under US GAAP, quarterly net profit was only $22 million, a steep 77% decline from $92 million in the same period last year, with diluted EPS of $0.04 (vs. $0.13 last year). Non-GAAP net profit was $270 million, up 3% year-over-year. This divergence was mainly caused by rising costs—total costs and expenses for the quarter increased from $991 million a year ago to $1.14 billion, outpacing revenue growth, resulting in operating profit dropping from $59 million to $30 million and the operating margin narrowing from 5.6% to 2.6%.
In terms of cash flow, operating cash flow was $316 million, down 2% year-over-year; free cash flow was $300 million, down 6% year-over-year, with a free cash flow margin of 25.6%.
User Record High, Uneven Regional Revenue Performance
In Q3, Pinterest's global MAU increased 10% year-over-year to 661 million, setting a new record. Among them, US and Canada users grew 4% to 107 million; European users increased 7% to 161 million; other regions saw users rise 13% to 394 million.
However, user growth did not fully translate into income: US and Canada revenue grew 14% to $894 million, showing robust performance; other regions’ revenue surged 24% to $87 million; yet, despite user growth, European revenue remained flat at $193 million. Global Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) showed divergence: US and Canada ARPU rose 10% to $8.38, other regions increased 9%, while European ARPU fell 7% to $1.21—dragging global ARPU up only 1% to $1.80, further widening the gap in regional monetization capacity.
New EU Regulations Pose "Headwind": Low-Value Parcel Tax Exemption Ends
A notable new adverse factor is the change in the European regulatory environment. According to CEO Bill Ready, Q3 revenue was negatively affected by new European rules impacting cross-border sellers.
Starting July 1, 2026, the EU will abolish the long-standing VAT exemption for low-value goods shipped into the EU from overseas: such parcels will now be subject to a flat temporary tariff of €3 per piece; from November 1, non-EU online stores and direct-shipping consumers’ packages will also face additional handling charges levied by the European Commission. This policy change directly impacts many cross-border direct sellers relying on Pinterest to reach European consumers, consequently dragging down Pinterest’s advertising monetization in the European market.
Pinterest CEO Bill Ready stated: "Pinterest reached a record high of 661 million Monthly Active Users in Q3, with revenue up 12% year-over-year." He emphasized that AI-powered search and shopping tools are enhancing value for both users and advertisers on the platform.
Weak Q4 Guidance Becomes Stock Price "Killer"
The real trigger for the stock price plunge was the Q4 guidance. Pinterest forecasts Q4 revenue between $1.425 billion and $1.475 billion (midpoint $1.45 billion), implying 8% to 12% year-over-year growth, but this range is overall below consensus of $1.52 billion—even the upper end matches only the Q3 growth rate of 12%. Adjusted EBITDA guidance is $538 million to $588 million, also lower than market expectations of $605 million. The company said the revenue outlook already factors in moderate foreign exchange headwinds.
It is worth noting that Pinterest’s regular-session decline that day was also impacted by broader sector sentiment—Barron's tied the pre-market drop to concern over digital advertising following Alphabet’s earnings. With weak holiday season guidance and fading ad market sentiment, not even record user numbers could turn the tide.
