Alphabet's Google Finnish Unit Faces Investigation Over Environmental Damage at Data Center Site

01:02 PM EDT, 10/29/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google's Finnish subsidiary Tuike Finland Oy is the subject of a criminal investigation into suspected environmental damage at its planned data center site in Muhos, northern Finland, according to a police statement on Thursday. The Oulu Police Department opened the pre-trial investigation after a request from Finland's Licensing and Supervision Agency, according to the statement. Police said preliminary information points to irregularities and shortcomings in drainage and water management at the construction site, as well as possible lesser offences linked to the case. The preliminary investigation is expected to be completed in 2027, and a further update will be given in December, according to the police statement. A Google spokesman said in a email to MT Newswires that the company is "actively responding to enquiries from LVV and other authorities." The spokesman added that "we will cooperate with the investigation announced by the Oulu police on October 29 and will continue to focus on maintaining compliance at our sites."
