BitMine adds $24M in ETH – Can macro risks derail its Ethereum strategy?

Corporate Ethereum [ETH] accumulation is a double-edged sword.

The logic is simple: With DATs aligned to the broader market, there is a direct impact on their actual ETH exposure if there is either a risk on/risk off trigger. With risk-off sentiment forming around the FOMC decision and earnings reports, DATS may come under pressure as capital flows across traditional risk assets shift.

In this context, the upcoming 48 hours are potentially very important for Ethereum. BitMine (NASDAQ: BMNR) has just announced it bought 10,452 ETH worth about $24 million in a post on X. This brings its 30-day accumulation of Ethereum up to about 68,000 ETH. Its total holdings are now 6.05 million ETH.

The interesting part? BMNR also bought back $45 million worth of its own shares.

From a strategic standpoint, BMNR continues to add more ETH while buying back company stock.

This is particularly noteworthy as BMNR has fallen 20%+ this month, making this its worst monthly run since June and wiping out over 60% of its Q3 gains, after almost hitting $30. The move suggests BMNR is using the price weakness to buy back shares while continuing to build its Ethereum treasury.

This brings the focus to the upcoming macro week.

Despite lower oil prices helping the U.S. equities rebound, the BMNR has fallen over 6% this week, and its $20 support level is under threat. If there is a greater risk-off mood, this can cause further downside pressure on BMNR’s stock price as it continues to buy back shares at a discount.

This raises a key question: Can BitMine sustain its Ethereum accumulation strategy amid broader market weakness?

Is BitMine laying the groundwork for Ethereum’s corporate accumulation?

However, the on-chain data suggests otherwise. From a macro perspective, November starts with some serious volatility, with the market focusing on interest rates. If the Fed maintains a neutral stance this time, but gives a slightly more hawkish outlook on the future policy, then the market could still see a risk-off move as capital flows out of risk assets.

Against this backdrop, the slowdown in corporate ETH accumulation comes under scrutiny. Following BMNR, the next biggest holder of ETH is SharpLink Gaming (NASDAQ: SBET) which currently holds over 880k ETH in its DAT. However, the company has only added less than 1,100 ETH over the past 30 days.

Technically, this comes despite more than 68k ETH flowing into BitMine’s Ethereum treasury, highlighting how corporate accumulation remains heavily concentrated rather than being spread across other holders.

More importantly, as shown above, SBET has dropped by more than 22% so far this month. This means that if the market weakness continues, these treasuries may not have the ability to add as much ETH as before, and BMNR could take on a greater portion of the corporate Ethereum demand.

So, while BMNR’s latest 10k ETH purchase is a bullish signal, it may not be enough to offset the broader slowdown in corporate ETH accumulation. In this context, Ethereum might remain under pressure ahead of key macro events.

Final Summary

  • BMNR continues to buy ETH and buy back shares despite market weakness.

  • Slow ETH buying by other treasuries could limit broader corporate demand for Ethereum.

The ongoing weakness in the Intel PC market and high costs for components such as memory are the main reasons, with the PC business still accounting for about half of total revenue. To alleviate the capacity shortage in data centers, Intel is shifting part of its Oregon factory production from the 18A process to the Intel 3 process, putting foundry trust to the test once again. Experts say that if Intel does not have excess capacity beyond meeting its own needs, it cannot be considered a reliable supplier.

Nomura: AI data centers are highly profitable; the downturn in tech stocks is a market “misjudgment”

Nomura stated that the market is misinterpreting Big Tech's negative free cash flow as "AI is not profitable," when in fact, it is a fundamental confusion between the concepts of profit and cash flow. With AWS boasting a profit margin of 38.7% and Google Cloud's year-over-year surge of 103%, cloud business is thriving—negative FCF is merely a timing difference due to the J-curve effect. Nomura bluntly pointed out that if stock prices fall as a result, it would be an excellent entry opportunity for long-term investors.
