Michael Saylor defends Bitcoin with English language analogy amid criticism

Michael Saylor, executive chairman of MicroStrategy and a prominent advocate for Bitcoin, addressed widespread criticism against investing in the cryptocurrency in a new social media post. MicroStrategy is recognized as the company holding the largest corporate reserve of Bitcoin, making Saylor highly influential in the crypto market.

English language analogy sparks conversation

Saylor offered a fresh analogy comparing Bitcoin’s value proposition to the global dominance of the English language. In his post, he responded to arguments claiming that there is little reason to purchase Bitcoin because anyone can create new cryptocurrencies. According to Saylor, dismissing Bitcoin for this reason is similar to arguing that learning English is unnecessary simply because other languages can be invented.

This parallel intends to underline Bitcoin’s unique position and established acceptance, much like English serves as a global lingua franca despite the existence of many other languages.

According to Saylor, “Saying there is no reason to buy Bitcoin because anyone can create a cryptocurrency is like saying there is no reason to learn English because anyone can create a new language.”

The analogy has generated considerable discussion within the crypto community. Many users have voiced their support for Saylor, noting that the comparison helps emphasize why Bitcoin continues to stand apart from thousands of other digital assets that are regularly launched.

Bitcoin’s value as an established system

Saylor’s statement underscores a crucial distinction in the cryptocurrency market: while technological barriers to creating new digital coins are low, the real value lies in global recognition, network effect, and trust—qualities Bitcoin has accumulated over more than a decade.

The argument highlighted that the mere technical ability to introduce countless alternative cryptocurrencies does not necessarily translate into comparable value or adoption. Bitcoin’s position, much like that of a widely spoken language, stems from its early adoption, robust security, and network strength.

MicroStrategy’s continued accumulation of Bitcoin further supports Saylor’s view of the cryptocurrency as a fundamentally different asset compared to newer, less established alternatives.

Many in the crypto sector echoed Saylor’s viewpoint, suggesting that, even with constant innovation and the emergence of new projects, Bitcoin’s history and global usage remain unmatched.

Debate over Bitcoin’s uniqueness remains active, yet Saylor’s analogy has resurfaced longstanding arguments about the significance of market leadership versus the proliferation of alternatives in the digital asset industry.

Observers note that, as with dominant languages, the strengths of Bitcoin are reinforced by widespread adoption, economic infrastructure, and ongoing community involvement.

Discussion is likely to continue as both critics and supporters engage with Saylor’s comparison, weighing the nuances between creating an asset and building a lasting, valuable ecosystem.

In the fourth fiscal quarter ending at the end of September, Apple's total revenue increased nearly 12% year-on-year. iPhone revenue exceeded expectations with a 17.5% increase, and Mac revenue grew nearly 24%, surpassing analysts' expectations by 11%. However, iPad and wearable device revenue both fell short of expectations. Greater China revenue increased 21%, though it was still 6.5% below analyst expectations. For the full fiscal year, revenue set a historic record, but shareholder returns declined, with stock repurchases down nearly 5% from last year to $86.4 billion. During the earnings call, management disclosed that rising memory prices are eroding profit margins, and guidance for next quarter’s gross margin is only 45% to 46%, much lower than this quarter’s 47.9%. After-hours stock price fluctuated and turned downward, at one point dropping more than 4%.
