Update: Meta Reportedly Ordered to Pay New Mexico $25 Billion in Cambridge Analytica Case

07:15 AM EDT, 10/22/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Update with Meta's response to a request for comment in the last paragraph.) Meta Platforms (META) was ordered to pay New Mexico $25 billion after a jury determined the tech giant was liable for deceiving Facebook users about privacy policies, according to media reports. In September, the jurors found Meta liable for more than 43 million violations of the state's consumer protection laws when Cambridge Analytica collected Facebook user data to generate targeted political ads, the reports said. "This ruling, and the Attorney General's approach to this enforcement, makes it all but impossible to do business in the state of New Mexico," said Meta Chief Legal Officer C.J. Mahoney in an email to MT Newswires. "At its core, this lawsuit seeks to impose a tax on speech to enforce new rules for what people can say online. We are confident we will prevail on appeal."
