Comcast plans large-scale layoffs to pave the way for NBC's independent operations after the spinoff

According to reports from informed sources, Comcast plans to carry out large-scale layoffs as part of a comprehensive restructuring of its cable, broadband, and wireless businesses. These individuals, who requested anonymity because the plans are not yet public, stated that this restructuring is aimed at enabling Comcast to operate more robustly as an independent company after the planned NBCUniversal spin-off next year. The layoffs may begin to be announced in the coming weeks, with the goal of creating a leaner workforce, freeing up cash to invest in more growth opportunities, and achieving other long-term objectives.
The Philadelphia-based media and telecommunications group has been losing cable TV subscribers for some time, as users cut the cord and shift to streaming options. Recently, Comcast has also been losing internet customers, with competitors like AT&T, T-Mobile US, and Verizon launching attractively priced fiber or fixed wireless connections.
The urgency of this restructuring stems from Comcast's impending structural break-up. In June 2026, the company announced it plans to complete a tax-free spin-off of NBCUniversal and Sky by mid-2027. After the spin-off, its media assets will include NBC, Universal Pictures, Peacock, theme parks, and Sky, with current co-CEO Mike Cavanagh serving as CEO of the spun-off company; meanwhile, the connectivity business (cable, broadband, wireless) that retains the Comcast name will be led by returning former CFO Michael Angelakis.
Comcast has been promoting its broadband by offering a five-year price guarantee and one year of free wireless lines. The company will report its earnings on Thursday.
Comcast has adjusted its business portfolio to boost its stock price, which is down around 21% this year. Cable networks such as CNBC and MS Now were spun off into Versant Media Group in January.
Co-CEO Brian Roberts has already made changes to the senior management to address subscriber losses. He promoted Steve Croney to CEO of broadband and wireless, and hired former Apple and DirecTV executive Jon Gieselman as chief growth officer.
Former CFO Michael Angelakis will return to lead Comcast after the NBC spin-off.
As of December 31, 2025, the company had 179,000 full-time and part-time employees.
