01:31 PM EDT, 10/20/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks were higher Tuesday afternoon, with the State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) increasing 0.5% and the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) adding 0.9%. In sector news, Redbook US same-store sales rose by 9.0% from a year earlier in the week ended Oct. 17 after a 10.4% year-over-year increase in the previous week as consumers were more cautious about their budgets and sought out deals. Redbook noted that Halloween-related purchases have gained momentum after the Columbus Day weekend. In corporate news, General Motors (GM) shares fell past 8% after its updated 2026 profit guidance fell short of Wall Street's projections at the midpoint, overshadowing a Q3 beat and a share buyback plan. Hasbro (HAS) reported fiscal Q3 adjusted earnings above market forecasts. The toy and game maker raised its fiscal 2026 constant-currency sales growth outlook. Its shares jumped over 9%. Kroger (KR) said it targets comparable sales growth of about 3%, excluding fuel and pharmacy, in 2029 as it launches a multiyear plan to strengthen its grocery business, improve customer value and accelerate growth. Kroger shares rose 0.1%. Walmart (WMT) launched a membership plan combining Walmart+ and Sam's Club Plus for $120 a year, the company said. Walmart shares were down 0.3%.

AI trading weakens, funds return to safe-haven assets, and U.S. Treasury yields hit their lowest level in nearly a month

The outlook for AI trading is being reassessed, reshaping global asset allocation. Stock market pressure is prompting investors to flock to safe-haven assets such as US Treasuries, yen, and Swiss franc. The 30-year US Treasury yield hit 5.38%, the lowest level since September 23. The yen appreciated 0.3% against the US dollar to 157.68, and the Swiss franc rose 0.2%. Safe-haven buying emerged as oil prices surged due to an attack in Saudi Arabia. The future direction will depend on which theme dominates: inflationary pressures or a cooling in AI trading.
