Nvidia researchers have run what they call a record-breaking fault-tolerant quantum simulation on Jupiter, Europe's largest supercomputer.

According to Jinse Finance APP, researchers at NVIDIA (NVDA.US) have conducted what they claim is a record-breaking fault-tolerant quantum simulation on Jupiter, the largest supercomputer in Europe. This simulation was run on NVIDIA's GH200 GPU. The 104-qubit simulation used 90% fewer physical qubits compared to previous attempts. NVIDIA stated that this achievement could eventually drive research in areas such as drug development, financial modeling, and materials science.

NVIDIA CEO and founder Jensen Huang said: "Practical quantum computing will require extremely complex fault-tolerant systems, and understanding how these systems perform at scale is crucial for building them. Our results in Jülich demonstrate how quantum processors and GPU supercomputers can work together to tackle research problems that were previously out of reach, accelerating the discovery of transformative quantum applications."

The Jupiter supercomputer is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and is one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. Kristel Michielsen, head of the Jülich Supercomputing Centre at Forschungszentrum Jülich, said: "Europe's investment in Jupiter gives researchers the ability to explore problems that were previously inaccessible. By collaborating with NVIDIA, we are extending this capability to the field of quantum computing, helping scientists make better informed decisions on design solutions most likely to deliver practical applications."

Research institutions, government agencies, and enterprises around the world are trying to develop fault-tolerant quantum computing systems. Earlier this month, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) selected IBM (IBM.US) and IonQ (IONQ.US) to lead the next phase of its Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, with the ultimate goal of developing a fault-tolerant quantum computer. IBM expects to deliver the first set of fault-tolerant quantum computing systems by the end of 2029.
