Heightened geopolitical risks in the Strait of Hormuz, combined with competition between Europe and Asia for winter supplies, have rendered Japan's alternative options nearly ineffective. Even the hedging strategy of switching to coal has backfired, with Newcastle coal prices recording an approximately 30% cumulative increase compared to pre-Middle East conflict levels.
