Market Chatter: General Motors CEO Says Next-Gen Driver-Assist Technology Advancing Toward 2028 Launch

MT newswireMT newswire2026/10/12 23:55
07:55 PM EDT, 10/12/2026 (MT Newswires) -- General Motors Company (GM) remains on track to introduce "eyes-off, hands-off" driving technology by 2028, CEO Mary Barra said, CNBC reported Monday, citing her interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer on "Mad Money." Barra said that she recently tested the system and was impressed by how much it had improved since an earlier ride in March. She said the team is making significant progress toward the 2028 goal and that GM will be well positioned in personal autonomy, according to the report. Barra defended GM's decision to exit the Cruise robotaxi business, calling it difficult but the right call, and said the company retained much of the Cruise team to work on personal autonomous driving. She said GM is not in the taxi or bus business, the report said. She also pushed back on the notion that wider adoption of autonomous vehicles would reduce personal car ownership, saying people still value having a car in their driveway, according to the report. However, Bank of America strategist Hartnett warns that due to rising real yields, the performance of AI and banking stocks, and the volatility of the midterm elections, there is still a preference for risk aversion in the coming weeks.
