Reuters, September 28 - American Express AXP.N said on Monday that its credit card is now accepted at more than 190 million merchants worldwide, with its acceptance outside the United States more than doubling over the past four years.
This expansion aims to close the longstanding gap between American Express and its competitors Visa (V.N) and Mastercard (MA.N), both of which have historically enjoyed broader merchant acceptance outside the United States and hold a larger presence in many key international markets.
The company said it is focused on strengthening acceptance coverage in regions frequently visited by cardholders, including travel destinations such as Barcelona, Hong Kong, Paris, and Sicily.
"We also look at popular locations that will host major events—such as sporting events—which has led us to focus on cities like Mexico City and Melbourne," said Anna Marrs, President of Global Merchant and Network Services at American Express, in an interview with Reuters.
Marrs said the company is also targeting other areas that boost cardholder spending, such as the restaurant industry.
Merchant acceptance is a key factor in driving spending for credit card networks. The more widely a credit card is accepted, the more likely customers are to use it for day-to-day purchases, travel, and other expenses, thereby generating more transactions and revenue.
In the most recent quarter, American Express’s "billed business," a metric for card spending, surged 9% to $455.8 billion.
The move aims to capture a greater share of international spending from younger customers, who have become an increasingly important part of its user base.
The company reported in July that quarterly revenue rose 10% year-on-year to $19.6 billion.
American Express stated it will continue to deepen cooperation with global payment platforms, payment service providers, authorized partners and local acquirers to massively expand the card’s acceptance.
"We continue to see opportunities all over the world," Marrs said. "We will never stop in our efforts to expand our coverage."
