This is Druckenmiller's first public visit to South Korea, focusing on the two main themes of AI and energy. He will be inspecting Samsung and SK Hynix, which hold key positions in AI supply chain bottlenecks such as HBM and semiconductor materials, as well as Doosan Enerbility, which is involved in nuclear power and gas turbines. It is worth noting that he has reduced his AI holdings to 20% of what they were six months ago; this visit is interpreted as a strategic shift from broad investments to the precise selection of core targets.

Stanley Druckenmiller, also known as the “mentor of Bessent” and a global macro investing heavyweight, is on an official visit to South Korea, planning meetings with senior executives of major companies such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Doosan to explore investment opportunities. This is his first public visit to Korea, which the market views as a significant signal of the rising status of Korean companies in the global AI supply chain.

According to Korean media reports on September 20, industry sources revealed that Druckenmiller will first meet with executives of Doosan Corporation and Doosan Enerbility in Seoul as early as September 22, and will subsequently visit other major AI-related companies such as Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Naver, and Coupang. In an interview with Morgan Stanley in February of this year, Druckenmiller mentioned that he held "large positions" in the South Korean and Japanese markets. His trip to Seoul is seen as an effort to review existing investments while actively searching for new opportunities.

Notably, this visit coincides with Druckenmiller adopting a much more cautious attitude towards AI investments. At an investor event in New York on September 10, he disclosed that he had reduced his AI industry investments to 20% of their size six months prior. Analysts believe his move to personally visit Korean AI companies signals a shift toward more targeted screening, focusing on those that truly control bottlenecks within the AI industry chain. Should this visit lead to substantial investments, it could trigger more heavyweight global investors to come to South Korea, prompting a reassessment of Korea's role in the global industrial supply chain.

First public visit to Korea, focusing on AI and Energy

Druckenmiller’s visit to Korea is centered around two main themes: AI infrastructure and energy.

In the AI sector, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are the core suppliers of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), an indispensable key component for AI chips. Doosan Corporation, meanwhile, has significant involvement in copper clad laminate (CCL)—a critical material used for AI chip substrates.

Reports indicate that with AI infrastructure investments continuing to expand, the growing importance of Korean companies in key bottleneck areas such as memory, semiconductor materials, power generation equipment, and power grids is one of the main driving forces behind Druckenmiller's trip.

In the energy sector, Doosan Enerbility’s core business includes key equipment for nuclear power plants and gas turbines, which is highly consistent with Druckenmiller’s recent focus on energy investments.

It is reported that his Duquesne Family Office spent over $127 million in Q1 this year to acquire shares in Argentine oil and gas producer YPF, as well as establishing a new position in Mexican energy company Vista Energy. Market insiders expect that after meeting with Doosan executives, he will evaluate whether to further increase his investments in Korea’s energy sector.

Targeted selection under the context of reduced AI investment

Another layer of meaning behind Druckenmiller’s visit is that while he is actively cutting back his overall AI exposure, he has chosen to personally investigate AI-related companies in Korea—a contrast that has sparked broad market interpretation.

Analysts believe this is not a broad withdrawal from AI investment, but rather a more selective strategy shift—from placing wide bets on AI concepts to focusing on core targets that control industry bottlenecks. Korean companies happen to be concentrated at key nodes of the AI supply chain, such as HBM, semiconductor materials, and data center power infrastructure, which fits this screening logic.

A financial industry insider noted, "Druckenmiller's visit to Korea can be seen as a signal that Korean companies have become a key axis in the global AI supply chain." However, the same insider emphasized, "It remains to be seen whether this visit will ultimately result in additional substantive investments in Korean companies."

Managing $5.2 billion in assets, closely connected to US core decision-makers

Druckenmiller is one of Wall Street’s most influential global macro investors, rose to fame for his massive profit from shorting the pound in 1992. He currently manages the personal and family assets at Duquesne Family Office, which as of last June reported a US-listed securities portfolio worth $5.2 billion (about 7.2 trillion KRW) to the SEC.

Druckenmiller has strong ties to America’s core policy circles, and is widely described in the industry as the mentor of US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh also previously worked at Duquesne Family Office. According to reports, a financial industry insider said, "Druckenmiller’s judgments and market outlook carry substantial influence in the global financial investment industry."

For this reason, his investment moves have always attracted close market attention. Industry insiders comment that Druckenmiller’s visit to Korea could become a catalyst for more heavyweight global economic figures to visit the country in succession. "If more global business leaders expand investments after visiting Korea, it could prompt a reassessment of Korea’s position in the global industrial supply chain."

How to avoid AI? This is the big dilemma for pension funds and sovereign funds

The AI wave is breaking through institutional investors' diversification defenses. From stocks and private equity to bonds and infrastructure, AI risk has fully penetrated—Goldman Sachs estimates that companies related to AI account for 40% of the S&P 500's market value, and AI bond issuances make up nearly half of the investment-grade market. Pension funds and sovereign wealth funds are being forced to redefine "risk," struggling to survive between missing out on gains and excessive concentration.
