Jensen Huang: Nvidia chip sales will double next year compared to this year, AI cannot be regulated like social media
Jensen Huang opposes applying social media regulations directly to AI, arguing that social media is a product, while AI is an underlying technology that supports other technologies and products. He believes regulation should target products, not the technology itself. He emphasizes rigorous testing and states that products should be withheld from release if they are not safe enough. "AI safety is of utmost importance."
Due to his optimistic outlook on the prospects of AI technology being applied to more industries, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made a positive statement. He said, “Nvidia’s chip sales next year will be double this year’s.” At the same time, he emphasized that unsafe products must be stopped and that “AI safety is of utmost importance.”
After Jensen Huang made this statement before the U.S. stock market opened on Thursday, June 17th (Eastern Time), Nvidia's share price rose further, reaching a new intraday high in early trading with a 2.8% gain, poised to close higher for a third consecutive session. This extends the rebound from the lowest closing level since August 26, following five straight days of losses, and partially recoups last week's cumulative drop of over 5%.

On September 17th local time, at an AI summit in Scotland hosted by King Charles III of the United Kingdom, Jensen Huang said that AI should not be regulated like social media, as AI is essentially a technology, not a product. Regulators should develop rules targeting AI products and their specific applications, rather than directly regulating the underlying AI technology itself.
AI Demand Continues to Spread, Nvidia Optimistic About Next Year’s Chip Sales
According to reports, during an interview at the summit, Jensen Huang said that AI is bringing significant benefits to various industries. As AI spreads into different sectors, he expects Nvidia's chip sales over the next year to reach twice the volume of this year.
This expectation continues Nvidia's previous optimistic outlook on AI demand.
In August, Nvidia’s performance outlook projected the company's revenue for the next fiscal year to grow by about 70%. Management also said that revenue could even double if supply can meet strong demand.
Jensen Huang Opposes Copying Social Media Regulation: AI is Foundational Technology
According to reports, Jensen Huang believes that there is a “big difference” between AI and social media. Social media is a product, while AI is a foundational technology supporting other technologies and products; therefore, regulation should focus on products rather than the technology itself.
He said that current AI safety issues mainly involve products that are not ready for release. Regulators should continuously watch for actual problems that emerge during AI deployment and, if necessary, enhance the existing regulatory framework by introducing new laws.
Jensen Huang also pointed out that AI is already being applied to healthcare, transportation, entertainment, and other fields. These industries already have corresponding regulations, so not all AI applications need a completely new regulatory system.
“If Not Safe Enough, Release Should Be Postponed”: Jensen Huang Emphasizes Rigorous Testing
On AI safety, Jensen Huang emphasized that developers must rigorously test systems and fully validate products in controlled lab environments.
“Those developing AI must strictly test their systems,” Huang said in brief remarks at the summit. “When a product is not yet safe enough, its release should be postponed.”
He believes that ensuring AI product safety is essentially an engineering issue: before public release, products must undergo thorough and rigorous testing and improvement.
King Charles III Convenes AI Giants, Ongoing Debate Over Safety Intensifies
This summit was hosted by King Charles III of the United Kingdom and attended by OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar, Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, Anthropic Public Affairs Head Tino Cuéllar, among others.
In his opening remarks, King Charles III said that people concerned about human well-being are eager for assurances that humanity will not lose control over its own destiny. He raised key questions: how to maximize the benefits of AI with safety as a priority and how to achieve consensus through international cooperation.
The summit comes as internal debate over the pace of AI development and potential risks is heating up within the industry. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently called for slowing down frontier AI development, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also expressed concerns over risks; Hassabis said such discussions are heading in the right direction.
Jensen Huang continues to oppose slowing down AI development, advocating for addressing safety risks through corporate responsibility, rigorous testing, and regulation targeting specific products.
