10:47 AM EDT, 09/02/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up nearly 232 points at mid-morning trading on Wednesday, recovering some ground after closing near 450 points lower Tuesday. Most sectors were higher, with base metals, up 1.8%, the best performer, led by the financials sector, up 1.1%. Information technology was the worst performer, down 1%, followed by energy, down 0.9%. The Bank of Canada held its overnight rate steady at 2.25% today, with the Bank Rate at 2.5% and the deposit rate at 2.20%. Recent data reaffirm the BoC's view of a broadening recovery in Canada's economy, but uncertainty is high and new US tariffs and threats of further action pose risks to the sustainability of the recovery, the bank said in a statement. In stocks, Algoma Steel (ASTL.TO) shares were up 5.6% to C$6.07, after it provided an update on the outage at its Lake Superior Power generating facility.
