Two Saudi oil tankers attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, sharply escalating risks to Middle East energy transportation

  1. According to shipping intelligence sources, two ultra-large oil tankers fully loaded with Saudi crude oil were attacked by unidentified projectiles minutes apart along the coast of Oman on Monday night while departing through the Strait of Hormuz. Each tanker was carrying about 2 million barrels of Saudi crude oil, having completed loading at Ju'aymah Port last week.
  2. Saudi Aramco had just resumed crude oil loading and sales from ports inside the Strait in August. This attack occurred only a few days after loading, indicating a tangible direct threat to Saudi energy exports and a rapidly worsening outlook for maritime security.
  3. Previously, the blockade and counter-blockade by the US and Iran around the Strait of Hormuz had already severely suppressed energy exports from the Gulf region. Mediation efforts by Qatar and Oman have not yet achieved any breakthroughs. Coupled with the latest threat of further strikes from the US President, the risk of crude supply disruption continues to rise.
  4. Brent crude oil has surpassed $92 per barrel. If the tanker attacks cause shipowners and charterers to become more cautious about transiting this waterway, war risk insurance premiums will soar further and more cargoes may be forced to reroute. The global oil trade flow faces an even deeper structural reshaping. It is important to follow whether Saudi Arabia and other Gulf oil-producing countries adjust their export and shipment strategies, as well as whether safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz can be effectively ensured in the short term.
