Canada and the United States' trade negotiations recently broke down. The U.S. imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian goods worth 20 billion USD, while Canada announced that it will impose an equivalent retaliatory tariff on the U.S. starting September 8. As the trade dispute between the two countries reached an impasse, Canada's union announced it had reached a provisional agreement with General Motors regarding investment in the Canadian automotive industry. According to Canadian sources, General Motors and the Canadian union's provisional deal includes investment of up to 1.1 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 536 million RMB) in the Canadian automotive sector. Under this provisional agreement, General Motors will produce its brand’s next-generation heavy-duty pickup trucks at its Oshawa plant in Ontario, Canada, and has pledged not to immediately sell or close its factory in Ingersoll, Ontario. The provisional agreement also supports the next-generation V8 engine project and plans to launch a project to assemble new-generation transmissions at the St. Catharines plant in Ontario by the end of 2029. Facing the ongoing trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada, union members in Canada believe that this provisional agreement may represent the best possible scenario. *(CCTV)*
