After Nepal and Tibet suffered devastating floods, Ripple’s $300,000 donation will support emergency food, water, and sanitation relief. The blockchain payment company shared the donation on X on August 28, with the beneficiaries being World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit providing meals in humanitarian emergencies, and Habitat for Humanity, an organization offering humanitarian aid and disaster recovery support.
The company outlined the intended purpose of the donation in its ongoing humanitarian response:
“Ripple is donating $300,000 to World Central Kitchen and Habitat for Humanity to support emergency meal distribution and water and sanitation efforts on the ground.”
The floods destroyed communities along Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors. Critical infrastructure suffered extensive damage. Habitat for Humanity is coordinating with local authorities and humanitarian partners to assess urgent needs and support the emergency response.
It is believed that a glacial ice and rock avalanche from the Himalayas blocked a river, later releasing a destructive flood surge downstream. The flood swept through Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading regions, destroying homes, roads, bridges, power supplies, and communications infrastructure, and struck the Gyirong border crossing in Tibet. Rescue operations continue amid unstable terrain and risks of secondary disasters.
According to a UNICEF report on August 27, at least 17,000 children have been affected, 18 schools have been destroyed, and 20 schools have been damaged. The agency is seeking $17.2 million for health, nutrition, water, sanitation, education, child protection, and early recovery programs.
Ripple’s donation is aimed at meeting two urgent needs identified in the affected regions. The company says World Central Kitchen and Habitat for Humanity will use these funds for emergency meal distribution as well as water and sanitation work.
This donation builds on the existing relationship between Ripple and the two humanitarian organizations. World Central Kitchen and Habitat for Humanity are among several nonprofits piloting the use of Ripple payments and the stablecoin Ripple USD (RLUSD) to test faster and more transparent methods of distributing emergency funds.
Previously, Ripple collaborated with Habitat for Humanity Ventures in Kenya on an anti-drought project. The RLUSD-based pilot targeted 533 pastoralists and used satellite data and smart contracts to trigger payments when vegetation conditions fell below preset thresholds.
The project provided around $75 for each eligible participant if drought conditions activated the payment mechanism. It demonstrated one way stablecoins and blockchain infrastructure can automate humanitarian aid in regions with limited traditional financial services.
Ripple’s broader payment infrastructure is connected to the XRP Ledger, a public blockchain built for fast, low-cost transactions. The Nepal and Tibet donation follows the company’s previous humanitarian partnerships while directing $300,000 to organizations supporting emergency relief on the ground.
