Canada Softens US Tariff Reprisal by Removing Seafood

MT newswireMT newswire2026/08/27 11:52
07:52 AM EDT, 08/27/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Canada has removed fish and seafood products from its list of counter-tariffs, just days after announcing import duties on US goods worth around C$28 billion. "Based on feedback, we have made select adjustments against broader economic harms, including removing seafood and fish products from our list of counter tariffs, while maintaining dollar for dollar and rate for rate response to US products," Canada's Department of Finance said early Thursday in a statement posted on X. The Department of Finance didn't add further details. Canada ended trade talks with the US last week after rejecting last-minute demands as unacceptable. On Saturday, US tariffs on around C$28bn of specific Canadian goods took effect, while on Monday President Donald Trump threatened to raise tariffs on all Canadian cars and trucks to 50% from the start of next year. On Tuesday, Canada responded with counter-tariffs of around C$28bn, targeting broadly the same sectors as the US measures. They will take effect on Sept. 8.
