RWA Trading Is Surging in 2026: What’s Driving the Tokenization Boom?

Real-world asset markets are entering a new phase in 2026, as tokenized products move beyond issuance toward active market use. CoinShares and Token Terminal found RWA spot trading volumes rose about 220% between Q2 2025 and Q2 2026.

Meanwhile, decentralized exchange spot volumes fell roughly 70%. The divergence shows tokenized assets gaining traction despite weaker crypto trading. It also reflects a market increasingly built around yield, collateral, and continuous access.

According to the CoinShares and Token Terminal report, RWA deposits across lending platforms and decentralized exchanges climbed from $2.3 billion to $7.4 billion. By contrast, total DeFi deposits declined about 15% during the same period.

That gap highlights a broader shift in how tokenized assets are being used. Rather than simply holding them, investors can deploy certain yield-bearing products as collateral while continuing to earn income.

As a result, tokenized Treasury and multi-strategy products, including JTRSY, BlackRock’s BUIDL and sUSDS, contributed heavily to collateral growth. Private-credit and delta-neutral products also added to demand, further expanding the role of RWAs across on-chain markets.

This structure gives investors an additional capital-efficiency advantage. By using yield-bearing assets as collateral, they can continue earning income while putting the same capital to work elsewhere.

At the same time, infrastructure has deepened around that demand. Nearly 70% of RWA deposits now sit on Ethereum-based lending venues, where liquidity remains concentrated.

Aave, Morpho, and Kamino benefit from established borrowing markets, while Ethereum’s network effects connect lenders, borrowers, and tokenized asset holders. CoinShares also found yields ranging from about 3.2% to 5.5%, giving investors several choices across different risk-and-return profiles.

Beyond lending, trading activity is also broadening across tokenized markets. Spot volumes remain concentrated in tokenized gold and funds, with XAUT and PAXG generating significant activity.

However, tokenized equities are gaining market share, while derivatives are opening another avenue for growth. Volumes on TradeXYZ, an RWA-focused venue built on Hyperliquid, have increased roughly 20-fold since launch.

Commodities, equity indexes, and technology stocks account for much of that activity. In addition, these markets provide exposure beyond traditional exchange hours, expanding access to assets with limited conventional trading windows.

Retail participation is growing alongside this expansion. Tokenized equities recorded the fastest holder growth among the categories studied, helped by lower minimum investment sizes.

Institutional capital, meanwhile, remains concentrated in larger yield-bearing products. This creates a clear split, with institutions favoring income-generating assets while retail growth is strongest in tokenized equities.

Broader market data also highlights the scale of the sector. RWA.xyz reports $38.30 billion in distributed assets, 2.93 million holders, and $353.11 billion in represented assets under its wider taxonomy.

At the same time, the regulatory backdrop has become clearer. In January 2026, SEC staff outlined structures for tokenized securities while reaffirming that federal securities laws continue to apply.

Taken together, the data show that the boom is increasingly being driven by utility rather than issuance alone. RWA products are now being traded, borrowed against, and used for broader market exposure.

"New Federal Reserve News Agency": Bessent's frequent interventions test the boundaries of Federal Reserve independence

According to The Wall Street Journal reporter Nick Timiraos, U.S. Treasury Secretary Yellen is gradually intervening in the Federal Reserve’s traditional policy domain by expanding long-term Treasury buybacks and suppressing yields, sparking concerns about central bank independence. The timing of these moves is abrupt and has been criticized as "price management," adding pressure to the existing interest rate disagreements within the Federal Reserve. This approach also undermines Fed Chair Powell’s policy framework, which relies on obtaining real signals from market prices.
