Boeing clinched a multiyear contract worth up to $131 billion to serve the U.S. Air Force's F-15 program, offering the plane maker a rich opportunity to grow its defense business over the next decade.

The contract announced yesterday covers potential payments for upgrades, retrofits and maintenance work across F-15 fleets in the U.S. and with foreign buyers including Japan, Israel and Saudi Arabia. The exact quantity of jets on order and the delivery schedule still need to be worked out.

The new contract covers work in Boeing's St. Louis factory through August 2037. The U.S. manufacturer has been expanding its factory footprint there and last year ratified a five-year contract with union machinists in the area.

Shares gained about 1% in premarket trading.
