GBP/JPY Outlook: Near-Term Trends and Key Levels

The British Pound (GBP) continues to show a slightly bullish tendency against the Japanese Yen (JPY), although upward momentum stalled near the 212.80 mark earlier today. So far, downward moves have been limited, with the pair holding above 212.15.

Positive market sentiment, fueled by the ceasefire in Iran, gave the Pound additional strength during Wednesday’s Asian trading hours. However, the inability to break through 212.80 after a 0.8% climb over the past three days hints at a possible pullback.

The GBP/JPY pair has now reached the target set by the Gartley pattern and touched the 78.6% Fibonacci retracement level from the late March decline. While the short-term outlook remains cautiously optimistic, failing to surpass 212.80 could encourage sellers to push for a deeper correction.

Technical signals on the 4-hour chart are still favorable, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) staying above 50 and the MACD indicator positioned above its signal line. In contrast, hourly charts reveal a potential double top formation and bearish divergence in the RSI, which may serve as a caution for buyers.

Key Support and Resistance Levels

  • Resistance: If the pair moves above 212.80, the next target is the significant 213.35 resistance zone, marked by highs from March 11, 23, and 26.
  • Support: Immediate support lies at the intraday low of 212.15, followed by the previous resistance at 211.50 (April 1 high) and the April 2 low at 210.35.

U.S. stock indices are only 0.2% away from all-time highs, but there is turbulence beneath the calm surface: CCC-rated bond spreads have exceeded 1,000 basis points, marking the widest level since 2023 and credit differentiation has reached historic extremes. The gap in RSI between bank stocks and the S&P 500 is the largest in 33 years, indicating deep overselling; 10-year U.S. Treasury yields have soared to 5.30%, a new high since 2002. The upcoming bank stock earnings season, kicking off this Tuesday, is viewed as a crucial moment to test whether the market can bridge the gap between "fundamental resilience and investor concerns."
