Japanese yen declines after reports suggest Takaichi expressed worries to Ueda regarding BOJ interest rate increases
Insights from Last Week's Meeting
The meeting itself was brief, lasting under 20 minutes. Despite its short duration, Prime Minister Takaichi was able to share her reservations with Governor Ueda. Interestingly, neither party publicly addressed these concerns immediately following their conversation.
Prime Minister's Reservations on Rate Hikes
According to Mainichi Shimbun, several sources indicate that Takaichi expressed her hesitation about the Bank of Japan moving forward with additional interest rate increases. This situation now places the central bank in a challenging position, as it must navigate its decisions carefully given its close ties with the prime minister.
USD/JPY Market Reaction
The news has prompted a rise in USD/JPY, with the currency pair advancing to the 155.80–155.90 range and buyers targeting the 156.00 level. This upward movement marks a decisive attempt to move past the persistent 155.00 threshold, which had previously hindered price action before the daily close over the past week.
A clear breakout here also signals strength above the 100-day moving average at 154.98, providing buyers with additional momentum for further gains.
However, traders should remain cautious: significant advances beyond the 155.00 mark could attract attention from Japan’s finance ministry. The risk of intervention remains elevated and will continue to act as a limiting factor for USD/JPY appreciation in the near term.
