Bitcoin (BTC-USD) faces further downside as Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh faces a key test today. Financial markets have priced in a 92.7% chance of a 25 basis point interest rate hike. According to CME (CME) FedWatch data, traders across digital asset and traditional stock markets are bracing for tighter monetary policy. The Federal Open Market Committee target range currently sits between 3.50% and 3.75%, with probability models placing only a 7.3% chance on a rate pause.

The upcoming decision creates a complex dynamic for Warsh, whom President Donald Trump nominated after calling for lower borrowing costs. However, official reports showing August headline inflation holding at 3.4% give the central bank limited room to lower rates. Higher interest rates typically increase borrowing costs and reduce appetite for risk assets like cryptocurrencies.

Today’s Press Conference May Carry More Weight

The outcome of today’s press conference may carry more weight than the benchmark rate decision itself. Wharton professor Jeremy Siegel stated that political pressure and upcoming midterm elections represent key factors influencing Fed policy choices. Meanwhile, former Fed governor Stephen Miran warned against unexpected policy shifts. He noted that raising rates while inflation cools shows an inconsistent approach by central bank leaders.

Uncertainty around the Fed’s reaction path has kept pressure on non-yielding assets. While cheaper borrowing costs historically boost assets like digital currencies and precious metals, higher rate expectations increase the cost of holding them. Analysts such as KPMG Chief Economist Diane Swonk noted that taking action today could help stabilize long-term borrowing costs down the road.

Bitcoin Holds Key Support Level as Gold Trades Higher

Bitcoin held near $75,594 ahead of the Fed announcement, reflecting a 1.17% decline over a 24-hour period. In contrast, spot gold traded up 1.4% on the day near $4,340 per ounce. Market sensitivity was visible when the August inflation report dropped on September 11, causing Bitcoin to fall from $77,100 to $76,050 within a single minute while gold experienced a quick drop before rebounding.

If the Fed stops raising rates today, Bitcoin could quickly bounce back from $76,000. But if Warsh raises rates by 25 basis points and signals more hikes ahead, Bitcoin could drop below $75,000.

At the time oif writing, Bitcoin’s price is sitting near $75,594.
