According to Zhitong Finance APP, driven by strong growth in artificial intelligence (AI) optical communications demand, Lumentum (LITE.US) delivered better-than-expected results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026 and guidance for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027.

The financial report shows that Lumentum's fourth-quarter revenue grew by 109.3% year-on-year to $1.006 billion, exceeding analysts' consensus estimate of $990 million. Although the earnings beat was not large, given that the optical communication sector the company belongs to has been highly focused on by the market, continuing to deliver better-than-expected results still sends a positive signal in itself.
By business segment, component revenue reached $649 million, up 102.7% year-on-year; system revenue was $357 million, up 122.6% year-on-year. Both major business segments saw revenue double, indicating that demand expansion is not concentrated in a single product line. The construction of AI data centers not only drives demand for individual components, but also boosts overall demand from lasers and optical devices to system-level solutions.
In terms of profitability, adjusted net income was $326 million, up 415% year-on-year; adjusted earnings per share were $3.23, surpassing the analysts' average forecast of $2.97; adjusted gross margin was 50.4%, an increase of 1,260 basis points year-on-year and better than the consensus of 48.8%; adjusted operating margin was 36.6%, up 2,160 basis points year-on-year. The rapid improvement of Lumentum’s profit model shows that demand for high-end optical communication products, economies of scale, and product mix improvements are collectively unleashing profit leverage.
It is worth mentioning that due to Lumentum converting part of its convertible notes into equity, it incurred a one-time non-cash debt settlement loss of $7.8 billion, resulting in a GAAP net loss of $7.162 billion for the fourth quarter.
Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston stated that the fourth quarter showed broad market progress, with key growth drivers such as OCS solutions and the cloud module business beginning to contribute incremental gains. He said, "Lumentum is at the heart of industry transformation. As the speed and bandwidth of AI computing workloads continue to increase, data center architects are embracing optical links as the primary means of connectivity. While our Q4 results reflect comprehensive business growth, key growth drivers—such as OCS solutions and the cloud module business (we are promoting the adoption of 1.6T optical modules)—are gradually emerging. Growing demand for ultra-high-power CPO lasers, the first batch of ELS module orders, and our extensive involvement in the NPO field all signal that optical technology is beginning to penetrate intra-rack interconnects, significantly expanding our optical technology’s addressable market."
Lumentum's guidance for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 also exceeded expectations. The company expects first-quarter revenue to be between $1.225 billion and $1.275 billion, with the midpoint of $1.25 billion higher than analysts' average estimate of $1.15 billion. Adjusted earnings per share are forecasted at $4.05–$4.35, with the midpoint of $4.20 also beating the analysts’ expectation of $3.58.
Michael Hurlston said, "Looking ahead, driven by AI demand, our growth momentum will continue to accelerate, and the midpoint of our Q1 revenue guidance is expected to reach $1.25 billion, achieving our target more than a quarter ahead of schedule."
It is reported that as the scale of AI clusters expands, pressure from internal bandwidth, power consumption, and latency in data centers is rapidly increasing. Traditional electrical connections face bottlenecks in higher-speed and higher-density scenarios, and optical interconnects are beginning to move from inter-rack and inter-switch connections towards intra-rack and near-chip connections. This is the most promising aspect of Lumentum’s report—if optical demand is no longer limited to traditional data center interconnects and enters intra-rack and near-packaging architectures, the company’s addressable market could be reevaluated. However, Lumentum also used the term "early signs," indicating these directions are still in the early phase of validation and order conversion. The market will continue to closely watch whether these CPO, ELS, and NPO opportunities can be transformed from initial orders and project engagements into sustainable, large-scale revenue.
As of press time, Lumentum's stock price rose more than 3% after-hours on Tuesday, after previously falling more than 4%. This stock price performance indicates that while the market recognizes the strong demand for optical communications and the performance guidance in the financial report, it is also digesting the huge GAAP loss, previously high expectations, and valuation pressure.
