A presentation document from Heineken shows that the company has urged UK pubs and catering venues to adapt to the surge in weight-loss drug use, or risk losing customers and seeing a decline in revenue. This marks a rare admission by a major alcohol producer that GLP-1 drugs pose a threat to beer sales. Research by JPMorgan indicates that around 10 million people in the United States used Novo Nordisk's semaglutide drugs, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, last year. The popularity of these drugs is causing a ripple effect throughout the consumer goods industry, including reducing consumer cravings for sweets and snacks, increasing demand for clothing alterations, and prompting companies to compete to launch products that can alleviate medication side effects. Heineken is the world's second-largest beer manufacturer, surpassed only by AB InBev. Heineken informed its catering and pub industry clients that GLP-1 drugs could reduce the desire to drink alcohol and, by making consumers feel full more easily and reducing consumption, could put pressure on beer and cider sales. The company also warned that scenarios where multiple pints of beer are traditionally consumed in one sitting may become increasingly difficult to sustain.
