According to sources familiar with the matter, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has invested approximately 1 billion USD in the US media giant Skydance.

According to Golden Ten Data, sources reveal that Tesla (TSLA.US) CEO Elon Musk has invested approximately $1 billion in the American media giant Skydance (SKYD.US). This investment comes as Skydance completes its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and begins integrating its vast film and streaming businesses. Facing close to $80 billion in debt, the company is actively seeking new equity financing to support business integration and cost-cutting plans.

As of the time of reporting, representatives for Musk and Skydance have not immediately responded to media inquiries. Skydance shares fell about 1% on Thursday.

On October 6 of this year, Paramount officially completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, with the merged entity adopting Skydance as its corporate name. This transaction brought together two of Hollywood's most renowned film studios, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures, as well as the streaming platforms Paramount+ and HBO Max. At the same time, the new company possesses a vast television network business, two major news divisions, and extensive corporate management functions. Effectively integrating these operations is now the main challenge facing the management team.

Skydance Co-CEOs David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz are leading this complex integration process. The company previously stated that it expects to realize $6 billion in cost savings over the next three years, primarily by improving operational efficiency through business consolidation and reducing duplicate expenditures.

However, the massive debt continues to be a significant financial pressure for the company. Skydance currently carries nearly $80 billion in debt, and while pursuing cost reductions, it also needs to ensure sufficient funding for its film production, streaming, and television businesses to maintain operations and development.

Against this backdrop, Musk’s roughly $1 billion equity investment will provide Skydance with new capital support and also highlights the longstanding business relationship between Musk and the Ellison family.

David Ellison's father is Oracle (ORCL.US) co-founder Larry Ellison. Larry Ellison and Musk have had years of investment cooperation. In 2022, when Musk acquired the social media platform Twitter (now renamed X) for $44 billion, Larry Ellison contributed $1 billion in support of the deal. In addition, Larry Ellison invested in Tesla in 2018 and served as a board member of the company.

In the Paramount acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, Larry Ellison also played a crucial role. He provided a personal guarantee for more than $40 billion in equity financing for Paramount’s acquisition plan, helping to complete the deal. Now, with Musk injecting about $1 billion into Skydance, their capital cooperation is further extending into the film, entertainment, and media industries.

For Skydance, this investment helps replenish equity capital during a critical integration phase, but compared to its nearly $80 billion in debt, a $1 billion capital injection remains limited. Looking ahead, the market will focus on whether Skydance can achieve its target of saving $6 billion in costs over three years, as well as whether the company can ease its heavy debt burden through further financing, improved cash flow, and business integration.
