Morgan Stanley holds an optimistic outlook on South African government bonds but maintains a cautious view regarding the trajectory of the South African currency, the rand. After the South African National Treasury announced its bond buyback plan, Morgan Stanley further raised its expectations for South African government bonds, believing that this initiative will provide strong support for longer-term bonds. It is understood that the South African Treasury’s arrangements include conducting domestic bond buybacks to smooth future maturity repayment pressures, while also reducing the issuance volume of fixed-rate bonds and inflation-linked bonds.Morgan Stanley’s analysts pointed out that the rand is more susceptible to the global interest rate environment, precious metal prices, and oil price fluctuations. Therefore, they remain cautious about the rand's future performance, favoring South Africa's duration assets over related foreign exchange risk exposures.
