QatarEnergy has signed an agreement with Cheniere Energy to purchase 4 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually from the latter, with the contract valid until 2054. This is the first time the Middle Eastern country has signed such a procurement agreement with the United States, as its own production was limited due to the Iran war. The deal comes as Qatar—one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas exporters before the conflict—seeks to supply customers whose deliveries were disrupted after the country’s Ras Laffan facility was damaged during the war. In addition, as shipping traffic through the critical Strait of Hormuz remains turbulent, QatarEnergy has also been forced to significantly reduce supply volumes.
