Benefiting from strong passenger demand, rising ticket prices, and growth in premium cabin business, United Airlines' Q3 revenue increased by 17.4% year-on-year, reaching a historic high.

According to Investing.com, United Airlines (UAL.US) released its Q3 2026 earnings report after the US stock market closed on Tuesday. Benefiting from strong passenger demand, rising ticket prices, and growth in premium cabin business, the company's revenue grew by 17.4% year-on-year, reaching a record high. Despite a sharp surge in fuel costs weighing on profitability, United Airlines still expects further acceleration in revenue growth for the fourth quarter, with year-on-year growth expected to exceed 20%, setting another new record.

The financial report shows that United Airlines’ total operating revenue for the third quarter reached $17.875 billion, up 17.4% from $15.225 billion in the same period last year. Of this, passenger revenue reached $16.241 billion, an increase of 17.6% year-on-year; cargo revenue reached $529 million, up 22.9% year-on-year; other operating revenue reached $1.106 billion, an increase of 12.9% year-on-year.

In terms of profit, United Airlines’ net profit for the third quarter reached $1.029 billion, up 8.5% from $949 million in the same period last year; diluted earnings per share were $3.14, higher than $2.90 in the same period last year.

However, excluding special items, the company's adjusted net profit for the third quarter was $833 million, an 8.4% decrease from $909 million in the same period last year; adjusted earnings per share were $2.54, an 8.6% decrease from $2.78 last year, but still within the guidance range previously provided by the company.

United Airlines’ third quarter pre-tax profit was $1.311 billion, an increase of 4.5% year-on-year, with a pre-tax profit margin of 7.3%; adjusted pre-tax profit was $1.109 billion, a decrease of 8.7% year-on-year, with an adjusted pre-tax profit margin of 6.2%, compared to 8.0% last year.

In terms of operating profit, the company’s third quarter operating profit was $1.446 billion, an increase of 3.6% year-on-year, with an operating profit margin dropping from 9.2% last year to 8.1%. Adjusted operating profit was $1.231 billion, down 6.9% year-on-year, with an adjusted operating profit margin decreasing from 8.7% to 6.9%.

Fuel Costs Surge Over 60%, Operating Expense Growth Outpaces Revenue

Despite record-setting revenue, rising fuel prices continued to place significant pressure on United Airlines' profitability in the third quarter. The financial report shows that the company’s operating expenses reached $16.429 billion in the third quarter, an 18.8% increase from $13.83 billion in the same period last year, outpacing the 17.4% revenue growth. Among this, aviation fuel expenses reached $4.843 billion, soaring 61.6% from last year’s $2.997 billion—an increase of about $1.846 billion.

In the third quarter, United Airlines’ average aviation fuel price reached $3.90 per gallon, up 60.3% from $2.43 per gallon last year, while fuel consumption increased by only 0.8% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, United Airlines’ third-quarter cost per available seat mile (CASM) grew 17.3% year-on-year; adjusted unit costs (CASM-ex), excluding fuel, profit sharing, special items, and third-party business expenses, increased by 7.8% year-on-year.

The company stated that continued volatility in aviation fuel prices has led to significant cost pressure. However, robust revenue growth and demand for premium products helped partially offset the impact of rising fuel costs.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby noted that employees have successfully coped with the evolving operational environment, and the third-quarter results demonstrate that focusing on building a brand-loyal airline enhances business resilience.

Premium Cabin Revenue Up 17%, Business Travel Income Surges 26%

From a business performance perspective, United Airlines saw growth across all major revenue streams in the third quarter, with particularly strong results in business travel, premium cabins, and cargo.

The company reported that premium cabin revenue in the third quarter grew 17% year-on-year, basic economy class revenue rose 16%, loyalty program revenue increased 17%, and cargo revenue grew 23%. At the same time, corporate contract business travel revenue surged 26% year-on-year, reflecting persistent strong demand for business trips with short notice in various industries.

Standard economy class revenue increased for the third consecutive quarter, with unit revenue up 17% year-on-year. In the third quarter, United Airlines’ total unit revenue, i.e., total revenue per available seat mile, grew by 15.9% year-on-year, marking the best quarterly unit revenue growth since the pandemic. Passenger unit revenue grew by 16.1% year-on-year, and average passenger yield increased by 16.8% year-on-year.

Notably, the company’s capacity increased by only 1.3% year-on-year, but passenger revenue grew 17.6%, indicating that unit capacity revenue growth was a key driver for overall performance improvement.

By region, United Airlines’ domestic passenger revenue in the US reached $9.708 billion in the third quarter, up 19.9% year-on-year, with domestic passenger unit revenue up 14.5%. International passenger revenue reached $6.533 billion, an increase of 14.3% year-on-year, with international route unit revenue up 17.4%. The Latin American market was particularly strong, with passenger revenue reaching $1.339 billion, an increase of 24.2%, and passenger unit revenue up a striking 30.5% year-on-year. Pacific route passenger revenue grew 16.5% year-on-year, while European route passenger revenue increased by 13.3%. By contrast, Middle East, India, and Africa route passenger revenue dropped 17.3% year-on-year, mainly due to a 36.5% year-on-year reduction in capacity in those regions.

Q3 Passenger Volume Hits Record High, Starlink Wi-Fi Covers Over 640 Aircraft

Operationally, United Airlines transported approximately 49.53 million passengers in the third quarter, a 2.4% year-on-year increase, setting a company record for third-quarter passenger volume. During the third quarter, the company carried about 538,000 passengers daily on average, with July’s passenger count hitting 18.4 million, a single-month record high.

United Airlines’ third-quarter load factor was 83.9%, down 0.5 percentage points from the previous year's 84.4%. Despite the continued growth in passenger volume, the company maintained strong operational reliability, with the lowest seat cancellation rate among the three major US airlines in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, United Airlines continued to upgrade in-flight internet service, positioning SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet as a major differentiator to attract travelers.

As of the end of Q3, over 640 United Airlines aircraft had been fitted with Starlink equipment, with about half of all United flights—including regional flights—offering the service. The company currently installs Starlink on about three aircraft each day on average and expects Starlink to cover 61% of flights by the end of 2026, rising to 87% by June 1, 2027, and achieving full fleet coverage by the end of 2027.

In September alone, more than 5.4 million United travelers experienced Starlink service. United Airlines said customer satisfaction ratings for planes equipped with Starlink are nearly twice those of aircraft with other Wi-Fi services, further boosting passenger satisfaction.

Kirby noted that Starlink is helping United Airlines attract new, long-term loyal customers, while the company’s leading app, services, in-flight products, and technological capabilities help further improve customer retention.

International Route Expansion Continues, 10 New International Destinations Planned by 2027

In terms of route network, United Airlines continues to expand its presence in international markets. The company announced it will launch its largest-ever international network expansion in the summer of 2027, adding 10 new international destinations, including Catania in Italy, Ibiza in Spain, Ljubljana in Slovenia, Luxembourg, Marseille in France, Okinawa in Japan, Olbia in Italy, Terceira Island in Portugal, Toulouse in France, and Valencia in Spain.

The aforementioned new routes are pending government approval. Additionally, the company plans to launch new international routes in the summer of 2027, such as Los Angeles to Osaka, Washington Dulles to Milan, Denver to Paris, and San Francisco to Tel Aviv.

United Airlines operated the largest domestic flight schedule in its history in the third quarter, covering 241 airports across the United States and Canada.

For fleet upgrades, the company's latest Airbus A321XLR aircraft entered service on domestic US routes for the first time in September. At the same time, United Airlines continued to expand its high-premium Boeing 787-9 operations, extending related services beyond Singapore and London to routes such as San Francisco to Zurich and Seoul.

Q3 Free Cash Flow Negative $1.8 Billion, Liquidity Maintained

In terms of cash flow, United Airlines generated $465 million in operating cash flow in the third quarter, down from $1.218 billion in the same period last year. Due to increased capital expenditures and other factors, the company's free cash flow was negative $1.843 billion in Q3, compared to negative $153 million the year before.

The company’s adjusted capital expenditures for the third quarter reached $2.193 billion, up from $1.881 billion in the same period last year. As of the end of September, United Airlines had $17.7 billion in available liquidity, including cash, short-term investments, and undrawn credit lines.

During the same period, the company's total debt, finance lease obligations, and other financial liabilities were approximately $26.4 billion, with a net leverage ratio of 2.4 times over the past 12 months. Additionally, on October 16th, United Airlines expanded its revolving credit facility, increasing the credit line from $3 billion to $5 billion.

The company said this move would further enhance the flexibility of its balance sheet and support its long-term goal of achieving investment-grade credit ratings.

Q4 Revenue Forecasted to Grow Over 20% YoY, Setting New Record

Looking to the fourth quarter, United Airlines expects revenue growth to accelerate further, forecasting total operating revenue to grow by more than 20% year-on-year, surpassing the 17.4% growth in the third quarter, and aiming for another record quarterly revenue.

This outlook reflects the company’s confidence in ongoing aviation demand, premium cabin business, and rising customer loyalty. However, with fuel price fluctuations and continued increases in operating costs, United Airlines’ profitability will still face some pressure.

The company stated that it will continue to enhance its competitive edge and drive long-term revenue growth through expanding premium product offerings, improving digital services, advancing Starlink rollout, and optimizing its global route network.

United Airlines is scheduled to hold its quarterly earnings call on October 21 to further discuss its financial and operational outlook for the fourth quarter of 2026 and beyond.
