It’s a new decade after ten years and a new chapter in the story of Storj. A decentralized cloud storage company has filed for Chapter 11 to restructure its balance sheet but continue its services, and is working toward a future of growth.

Storj Begins Financial Restructuring

Storj Labs states that it has sought voluntary Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of West Virginia. The restructuring, the company says, is to clear up old financial liabilities that had built up prior to the development of its current direction.

Storj said that its core operations are not impacted by the filing. Users will still be able to use the decentralized storage system without any interruptions to services, and customers’ contractual obligations will remain fulfilled during the proceedings before the court.

Management called the restructuring a “financial reset” and not an indicator of operational problems.

Ownership Model Could Expand Beyond Traditional Investors

Token Holders May Participate in the Restructured Company

Perhaps the most interesting part of Storj’s announcement is that it plans to create a wider ownership base following restructuring.

The company outlined that its long-term goal is to share ownership in the decentralized management, with community and among STORJ token holders. While no final mechanism has been announced, any proposal would require approval through the Chapter 11 process before becoming effective.

Parent Company Continues Supporting Storj

Storj said its parent firm Inveniam is still dedicated to helping the company in the restructuring process.

With the acquisition of Storj, Inveniam has directed the company to focus on its core decentralized storage business, selling non-core entities and previous acquisitions.

That will be the approach in chapter 11, where management can concentrate on enterprise cloud storage and decentralized infrastructure. The restructuring process will “streamline” operations and give the company a firmer financial footing for growth, said the company’s leadership.

Crypto Infrastructure Firms Continue Reshaping Business Models

Storj is among several blockchain infrastructure firms restructuring corporate in anticipation of the digital asset industry going mainstream. Instead the company is opting to restructure its decentralised network through a legal process in order to manage past debt without interrupting current operations.

The announcement also comes amidst a wider pattern among cryptocurrency infrastructure vendors that will put on more sustainable scalable models, enterprise demand, and capital allocations.

But the current focus for Storj is to keep the services running and finalise the financial restructuring, as it aims to create a governance framework more aligned with the project’s decentralised origins.
